A hurdler in high school, I switched to the throws when the hammer became a contested event (it is not commonly thrown in high school). When I graduated from college in 1996, I qualified for the Olympic Trials held in Atlanta, GA at the Olympic Stadium. I placed 19th at that competition and became determined to become not only a national but international contender in the event. I was sponsored by the Boston Athletic Association from 1997 through 1999 until I joined a corporate sponsorship athletic team with SoBe Beverages in the last Olympic year. I was an alternate to the Olympic team in 2000, but in 2001 earned a spot on the national team and competed in the World Championships. In 2002 I set my sights on becoming the top American womens hammer thrower and have attained that goal. I am also training to be a medal contender at the World Cup competition, which will be contested in Spain in September of 2002. I established myself as the world leader in the 20-pound weight throw (the indoor event for hammer throwers) and have carried that success into my outdoor season. Over the past six years I have risen in my national and international rankings, maintaining a number one in the U.S. and fluctuating between first and fourth internationally. Along with being a professional track and field athlete, I am a high school English teacher in Woodbridge, CT. Through my teaching career, I am able to serve as a positive role model for my students and the track and field athletes I coach at the high school. I am excited about my future and proud of my past success |
